Multimedia software engineering is an emerging research area based on the concepts of software engineering, multimedia computing and visualization. The concepts of software engineering consist of methods, procedures, tools and approaches to transfer the user requirements into a quality product. On the other hand, multimedia computing supports computer graphics, sound, animation and video in different applications. Presently, the software industry is specifically focusing on the use of visual languages and visualization techniques in software engineering for product development in multimedia computing for human computer interaction. We can view the integration of multimedia and software engineering with respect to the following two perspectives: 1) apply software engineering principles to design the multimedia systems, 2) apply the concepts of multimedia computing to the practices of software engineering. Although academic researchers working in the domain of computer networking, operating systems, real-time computing and human computer interaction have deep understanding of multimedia computing, it is not common in the software engineering research community. There is a need of research evidence to test and develop multimedia software engineering theories and practices.

The aim of this special issue is to provide a platform for both researchers and practitioners to discuss the research studies for managing the multimedia software engineering aspects including managerial, organizational, economic and technical. This issue will provide an opportunity to present the empirical evidence for exploring the power of multimedia to manage software engineering activities and identify the challenges faced by the software engineering community when they work on multimedia-based products. Moreover, it will provide a platform to both academic researchers and industrial practitioners to propose new techniques, tools, frameworks and approaches to maximize the significance of multimedia software engineering.

We welcome research articles which report research studies in various domains of multimedia software engineering. Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

- Empirical studies using quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods

- Empirical evaluation of multimedia software engineering techniques

- Social aspects of multimedia software engineering

- Machine learning for research in multimedia software engineering

- Process improvement standards and models for multimedia software engineering

- Multimedia software engineering knowledge management

- Risk management

- Quality management

- Managing human behaviors in multimedia software engineering Multimedia software engineering education

- Application of artificial intelligence models Big Data analytics for multimedia software engineering data

- Business process management

- Industrial case studies

Submission Guidelines

Authors should prepare their manuscript according to the Instructions for Authors available from the Multimedia Tools and Applications website. Authors should submit through the online submission site at https://www.editorialmanager.com/mtap/default.aspx and select “SI 1179 - Multimedia Software Engineering: Challenges and Opportunities” when they reach the “Article Type” step in the submission process. Submitted papers should present original, unpublished work, relevant to the topics of the special issue. All submitted papers will be evaluated on the basis of relevance, significance of contribution, technical quality, scholarship, and quality of presentation, by at least three independent reviewers. It is the policy of the journal that no submission, or substantially overlapping submission, be published or be under review at another journal or conference at any time during the review process.
