Bio-inspired Computing: relevant features and future perspectives

Bio-inspired computing is an area of study in the field of Computer Science where the ways of processing information and solving problems are modeled on the characteristics and behavior observed in living beings. Living beings possess very complex characteristics that are of great interest to human beings: such as learning, adaptability to the environment in which they find themselves, the property of responding to unconditioned reflexes and also, according to Darwin's theory, they have the ability to evolve. Bio-inspired computing, supported by the great technological development achieved by computational hardware, and advancing on classical computational methods, tries to reproduce all these properties to the extent that better results are obtained. This discipline, which is closely linked to the field of Artificial Intelligence, encompasses several areas, such as: Neural Networks, Cellular Automata, Bioinformatics and Evolutionary Computation. The aforementioned areas have taken a great interest as a field of research in Engineering and Computer Science. The purpose of this presentation is to present some of the techniques developed with the concept of bio-inspired computing, its applications in various areas of human activity and to consider its future possibilities. All this in order to encourage young researchers in computer science to explore and develop this relatively young discipline.
Bio:
Saturnino Leguizamón is a postgraduate professor and researcher at the Facultad Regional Mendoza of the Universidad Tecnológica Nacional, Argentina. His professional degree is Electronics and Electricity Engineer, with a Master's degree in Engineering Sciences, awarded by the University of Chile and a PhD in Engineering from the University of Mendoza. His professional experience has been focused mainly in the area of satellite remote sensing, where he has carried out research and training of human resources. These tasks have been carried out as a professional and researcher of the National Commission of Space Activities, CONAE, which is the space agency of the Argentine Republic. His research has been oriented to automatic pattern recognition, by computer, and to classification processes in satellite images. In recent years he has left aside the application of classical techniques, and has turned his interest in the study and application of interpretation and computational learning techniques based on the concept of complex systems, chaos and fractals, neural networks and cellular automata. For several years he has been a research member of the Applied Informatics group (TIC-211) of the Department of Languages and Computation of the University of Almeria. He is a member of SELPER, Society of Remote Sensing Specialists in Latin America and Life-Senior Member of the IEEE.
